 Our department employs not only New York State University Police Officers, but also University Police Communications and Security Specialists, Security Service Assistants as well as student employment opportunities such as walking escorts and gate attendants. New York State University Police Officer 1(UPO 1)

University Police Officers are responsible for the safety and security of the campus community. They respond to criminal and non-criminal calls for service on all university owned property. University Police Officers are New York State certified and must attend a state sanctioned police academy. In addition to calls for service our officers also give programs, attend community events, and assist with the planning and implementation of various university activities. This is an open, competitive, civil service position.

Requirements for appointment as a UPO 1:

  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must be a NYS resident at time of appointment
  • Be at least 20 years of age at time of appointment
  • Must not have reached their 43rd birthday on date of test(up to 6 years deducted for active military service)
  • 60 college credits OR 30 credits plus 2 years active military and an honorable discharge OR 30 credits plus NYSMTC pre-employment training and eligibility to complete second phase OR 2 year experience as a police officer with MPTC certification. Peace Officer status does not qualify.
  • Possess a valid NYS drivers license
  • Pass a civil service examination and be reachable on the eligible list of candidates
  • Pass a medical examination
  • Have binocular acuity of 20/30 corrected and no less than 20/100 uncorrected
  • Pass a physical agility test (see chart below)
  • Pass psychological evaluation and extensive background check 
  • Complete a Basic School for Police Officers
  • Complete a probationary period

University Police Communications and Security Specialist 1(UPCSS 1)

University Police Communications and Security Specialists primarily handle the dispatching responsibilities of our department. They take all emergency and non-emergency calls for service and dispatch appropriate police, fire, or medical personnel. In addition to those duties UPCSS1鈥檚 may be responsible for physical security of buildings, monitoring university cameras, traffic control and otherwise assist University Police as necessary.

Requirements for appointment as a UPCSS 1

  • One year full time experience as a police or peace officer
  • OR one year full time experience as a dispatcher for a public safety agency
  • OR one year active military service as a dispatcher or military police and an honorable discharge
  • OR 30 college credits
  • Must obtain NYS Security Guard certification within 90 days of appointment

Security Services Assistant(SSA 1)

Security Services Assistants are primarily responsible for the physical security and safety of buildings on university property. Their duties can include access control, visitor logs, monitoring of cameras, patrol of buildings, reporting of emergency situations and otherwise assisting University Police as necessary.

Requirements for appointment as an SSA 1

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must obtain NYS Security Guard certification within 90 days of appointment

Student Employment Opportunities

Our department receives funding for student worker positions. Currently sophomore students and above may apply for appointment as a walking escort or as a gate attendant. These positions work directly with University Police to provide a safe environment for students and the campus community. To apply for any of these positions visit hireBING by Handshake.

Walking Escort

This position will walk campus during the night hours in teams of at least two and provide walking escorts for students across the campus. They are provided high visibility clothing and insignia identifying them as student escorts.

Student Gate Attendant

This position staffs the entrance gate to campus which is active during the overnight hours. During this time this is the only source of access for vehicles. The position is responsible for ensuring that only campus affiliated persons, or those escorted by an affiliate or conducting authorized business, are allowed entry. They log the vehicle information of all vehicles that enter and forward any concerns directly to University Police.
